A highlighter can enhance your complexion and give your skin a natural, dewy glow. Here are 6 hacks to apply highlighter like a pro.
Choose the right highlighter color
Generally, a highlighter shade that’s about two shades lighter than your skin tone would give you a natural-looking finish.
You would also want to pick a highlighter that compliments your skin undertone. To check your skin undertone, look at the veins that are visible at your wrist.
- If your veins appear blueish or purple-ish, you have a cool skin tone.
- If your veins look green or greenish blue, you have a warm skin tone.
- If they are a mix of both, you may have neutral undertone.
Choose a cool color if you have a cool skin undertone, or a warm one if your undertone is warm. If you have a neutral tone, feel free to pick any colors that you like.
Use lighter concealers to highlight if you have textured skin
If your skin is bumpy, applying a shimmering product will make the area look more pronounced. To create a natural glow, use a lighter concealer on that portion to brighten it up and hide any imperfection at the same time.
Less is more
You only need to apply a teeny tiny amount to get a natural dewy look. Resist the urge to slather your face in highlighter and instead dab it only on the right spots.
Apply it to strategic areas
To get the perfect glow, you will need to apply the highlighter to the right spots. Generally, you would want to use it on areas that the sun would naturally hit, such as your forehead, down the bridge of your nose, the tops of your cheekbones, your cupid’s bow and your chin.
Apply it over your blush
Add luminosity to the apples of your cheeks by applying highlighter over your blush for a natural look.
Wet your brush for a foiled look
To intensify your highlighter’s glimmer, sprit your brush with a mish then dip it into a highlighter. This will give you a glazed finish look, giving a molten metallic effect.

Mix it into your foundation
If you prefer a subtle-looking glow, mix a tiny bit of a liquid highlighter with your liquid foundation. Apply using a sponge using dabbing and rolling motions to blend the product evenly for a seamless finish. This will make the glow appear uniform across your face.
