When Lunar New Year approaches, one of the most common associations with the celebration is the special dishes presented during the celebration. And by now you would probably be having these magic thoughts of the loud cheering and yelling during the toast for yee sang!
There are two most common CNY dishes we can associate with and we share some of its colourful history so the next time it is served on the table, at least you are ahead of everyone else and be the storyteller.
- Yee Sang or the prosperity toast has its tradition mentioned coming from Guangdong, China but it’s popularly made a custom by Chinese immigrants to Singapore and Malaysia. This cultural activity is safe to be said more popular carried out by Chinese in Malaysia and in the 1970s, the Lai Wah Restaurant started the modern-day method of serving the Yee Sang with a pre-mixed special sauce comprising plum sauce, rice vinegar, kumquat paste and sesame oil. Today, Yee Sang is declared as a Malaysian heritage food by the Malaysian Department of National Heritage.
2. Herbal mee suah or the longevity noodles is usually served on birthdays but it is also a common dish to serve during the Lunar New Year. The origin is said to be from Fujian, China and the noodles serve in vermicelli (long thin noodles) is used as the main ingredient in the dish of longevity mee suah, with herbal soup, chicken, vegetable and abalone in wishing those who consume the dish a long and healthy life.
