How does acne scar form?
Inflammatory acne lesions can result in scars with two main causes:
- Over-production of collagen at the wound site when the skin is healing; or
- Loss of collagen in damaged tissue
Studies have shown that there is a strong relationship between severity and duration of inflammation and the development of scarring, suggesting that treating early inflammation in acne lesions may be the best approach to prevent acne scarring.
