As this blog is coming out, you might have come across the biennial games hosted in the region happening. SEA Games is taking place with Hanoi, Vietnam as the host for the 31st edition – which initially was to be held in 2021 but due to the pandemic was postponed to this year and marking as a tourism breakthrough for the country and the region as recovering from the pandemic.

Officially kickstarted on 12 May and closing on 23 May, we are already at the pinnacle stage where at this moment the medal tally standing sees host country soaring up high (updated 20 May, 11am):

Our athletes began on a rampage when the diving team snatched all the diving gold medals at stake, 8 in total and led by two-time Olympic medalists Pandelela Rinong.

Nur Dhabitah Sabri paired with Pandelela to win the 10m women synchronise event while also securing a second gold in the women 1 meter springboard. Her win was also a sweet start as Nur Dhabitah was the flag bearer for the Malaysian contingent during the opening ceremony too!

Some of the key highlights include:

  • 40 sports across 526 events
  • 12 cities across Vietnam hosting in 37 gymnasiums and over 5000 athletes in total
  • For the first time, ESports making its debut
  • Malaysia is sending a contingent of 612 athletes

The SEA Games Federation at its meeting in Hanoi has unanimously awarded the 34th SEA Games in 2027 to Malaysia while neighbouring country Singapore will be hosting in 2029. Something to look forward to in the future!

With all the buzz happening at SEA Games, there are some prominent athletes from the region who are competing for their country and this includes Olympic gold medalists from Philippines – Hidilyn Diaz (women’s weightlifting), Singapore’s swim star Joseph Schooling, Thailand’s Olympic taekwondo champion Panipak Wongpattanakit and local hero Hoang Xuan Vinh (shooting).
