Which types of mosquito repellent work best?
- Products that contain DEET
- DEET is shorthand for the chemical N,N-diethyl-meta-toluamide, the active ingredient in many insect repellents. According to EPA, DEET works to repel insects by making it hard for the bugs to smell us, i.e. they can’t detect us.
- Products that contain Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus (OLE), or Citronella Oil
- OLE is the only plant-based ingredient recommended by the CDC, and works in a similar way like DEET. According to a CDC report, when oil of lemon eucalyptus was tested against mosquitoes in the U.S., it provided a similar level of protection to repellents containing DEET.
How often should you reapply a repellent?
Generally, it’s a good bet to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The higher the concentration of DEET or OLE, the longer the protection will last. If you are staying outdoor for less than 2 hours, go for a product with lower concentration of DEET (about 10%), but if you are going out in the woods or jungle, use a higher concentration of 20% to 25% and refresh every four hours or so. Commonly available products have a concentration of 30% OLE.
