The Olympic vibes just hit different, you know? Athletes grind for years, pouring their hearts into those few epic seconds, and we’re all about cheering for the winners, feeling for the losers, and getting pumped with national pride.

And guess what? 23 June 2023 is World Olympic Day! Even though we have to wait until 2024 for the next big event, no worries! We’ve got some surprising facts to keep the excitement alive until then.

Are you ready? Let’s go for the gold! 🏅

  1. Gold medals are mostly made of silver

Forget what you’ve heard! The gold medal isn’t all gold anymore. Since 1912, it’s been mostly silver with just a sprinkle of gold (around 6 grams) to meet the Olympic Charter. If we take the weight of the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics medals (556 grams), a solid gold medal would cost around $32,000 based on today’s market prices. Talk about pricey bling, huh?

The year was 1956 when Malaysia, then known as Malaya, stepped onto the grand Olympic stage for the very first time. One standout Olympian was Dr. M. Jegathesan, aka the “Flying Doctor,” who became known as the Fastest Man in Asia. His national record lasted an impressive 49 years until it was broken by Melaka sprinter Khairul Hafiz Jantan in 2017.

It’s a testament to our nation’s spirit and we can’t wait to see what future Olympic adventures await Malaysia! Go, Team Malaysia! 🇲🇾

Back in ancient Greece, athletes had a unique approach to competition. They didn’t stress about sponsorships, protection, or fashion trends, they competed in the buff! The reason behind this interesting choice is that the word “gymnasium” originated from the Greek term “gymnos,” which actually means “unclothed.”

So, quite literally, a gymnasium was considered a “school for unclothed exercise.” Talk about a different kind of dress code, right?
